3 commentsWhos.amung.us, a new web analytics software

There are some of webanalytics software to help you understand how people discovered your website, which pages they like, how long they stayed on web pages…
Whos.Amung.Us has a different approach to webstats and answers 2 very useful questions :
1) How many people are currently on your blog ?
2) What stories of your blog are they reading at the moment ?
As for me, the second question is the most important. Whos.amung.us doesn’t work with keywords search or pageview. Actually, it visualizes contents that is being read by visitors on your blog in every moment.
No registration and no javascript are necessary. Just copy a small HTML image code on your blog and stats will start. If you want, you can personnalize colors and font of image. The service uses .gif ou .png images, just choose !
No commentsAlt Search Engines : a new blog about web search engines
Here is a new website I discovered 3 days ago. Main goal of Alt Search Engines is to cover all alternative search engines around the world. However, I can see editorial attitude is not “anti Google”, even if they don’t talk a lot about it and… That’s a good point because we already have some good blogs about Google.
AltSearchEngines is edited by Charles Knight, an analyst and former SEO from Charlottesville, Virginia.
I added Alt Search Engines’ RSS in my Netvibes =)
No commentsAsk 3D is similar to Google Universal Search and… Ask X
Today, I have seen that interface design of Ask has changed.
The default interface of Ask.com (USA version)
As you can see, you can now directly choose your research type (web, images, city, news, blogs, videos, maps&directions, shopping) as Google Universal Research : this is Ask 3D. My first impress is good, even if I think that is just a enhanced copy of Google Universal Research. However, Ask is cool and it proposed a skin option. You can choose a skin for your search engine.
A better interface of Ask 3D =)
I have tried to search some news with Ask and that was interesting. Ask 3D suggests some keywords during your research. Besides, I have noticed that search results is better… Even if interface of search results looks like Exalead.
A new search results interface for Ask
Here are 3 columns. On the left side you can see some suggestions from Ask to help you in your research. Differences between “Narrow your research” and “Expand your research” is not enormous but this a good idea to have a part named “Related names”. However, I don’t see a big difference with old interface, concerning semantic research…
Conclusion : Ask, like Google, has upgraded its search engine to obtain an integrated set of search results on one page. Final results seems better than Google. So this is a good move by Ask.com to improve its search results presentation. However, I am waiting for a new algorithm of an innovating search results interface… I really have the impress to have a mix between Google and Exalead.
Visual concept : Google Images Search Categories
I have read the news on this blog. You can test a search with Google Images and you’ll see that the Search Engine knows how to categorize pictures.
That’s a new visual concept for the biggest Search Engine. Now, Google enables to classify images according to their type (faces, news, other).
For example, I would like to do a research about “w3c”.
Normal research : http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=w3c
As you can see, there are some kinds of pictures, such as people, maps, logos, diagrams…
Face research : http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=w3c&imgtype=face
This is amazing ! Google is able to recognize only with a visual concept that pictures are faces ! It is possible thanks to Neven Vision, whose speciality is image object recognition.
News research : http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=w3c&imgtype=news
Here are pictures which are related to news on the web.
If you desire to try with your own keywords, a simple tool is available on Google Blogoscoped.
No commentsHow does your Search Engine treat the No Follow attribute ?
Thanks this post, written by Lauren Baker, we can have a summery concerning management of No Follow attribute by search engines Google, Yahoo and Ask (not Live unfortunately) :

As you can see, the GoogleBot will not follow the “no follow” links. However, Ask doesn’t know the no follow attribute and this search engine refuses to consider it. Yahoo has a particular behavior with No Follow attribute, because it indexes pages but don’t give trust to “no follow” pages.
Finally, No Follow does not mean that search engines do not see the pages which No Follow attributed links point to, it means in some cases (not Ask.com) link value nor referral attribution is given. However, algorithms often change with time and they can evolve… This is not a static information.
